Description
Talanoa Hufanga is a safety for the San Francisco 49ers in the National Football League (NFL). He was drafted by the 49ers in the fifth round of the 2021 NFL Draft with the 180th overall pick. Prior to joining the NFL, Hufanga played college football at the University of Southern California (USC), where he earned several accolades including being named the Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Year and a consensus All-American in his final season.
Hufanga wears the number 29 jersey for the 49ers. The “Green Youth Stitched NFL Limited 2023 Salute To Service” designation on his jersey indicates that it is part of the NFL’s annual Salute to Service campaign, which honors the military community and raises awareness for veterans and active duty service members. The jersey features a camouflage pattern and green numerals, and a portion of its sales benefit the USO and other military support organizations.
As a rookie in 2021, Hufanga appeared in all 17 games for the 49ers, primarily playing special teams but also contributing on defense as a backup safety. He recorded 15 tackles, one interception, and two passes defensed on the season. With his combination of athleticism, intelligence, and physicality, Hufanga has the potential to become a key contributor for the 49ers in the coming seasons.
